Colorado dishes out some of the most bipolar weather of any other state in the U.S., most commonly, in fall and early to late spring. The most damaging of which can be hail from as small as a pea to as large as a cantaloupe. The most common question we get asked at Rock Canyon Roofing is, if there is a hail “proof” shingle that can be put on a roof in Colorado. The answer to that question is, there is not. However, there are “Impact Resistant” shingles that will give you a class 4 hail rating with insurance companies. Impact resistant shingles, rated by the insurance companies as a class 4 hail rating will, often times, give you a reduction in your insurance premium.
There are several options available in an impact resistant product. Owens Corning offers a product “True Definition Duration Storm” that looks like a standard shingle, but has an extra layer of protection on the back. The shingle will still show the pit marks from a hail storm, but they won’t be able go clear through the shingle.
Another new option that just came out recently is a product called F-Wave. It is a thermoset Polymer synthetic product that looks like a very high end asphalt shingle. It comes in a number of different styles, asphalt, slate and even a natural looking shake. This product comes with a 5 year hail warranty up to 2 inch hail.
An upgrade option, that is one of our favorites, is the Decra XD. It is a stone coating steel product that comes in a variety of different silhouettes from a barrel or S look to shake or asphalt. It is a light weight product that is classified as class 4 and can take some massive size hail impact.
